| There are potential health effects from work exposure to certain dyes, fabric treatments, and textile dusts. Chemicals proven to cause cancer or other serious health problems include: benzidine used in dyes, and formaldehyde used in permanent press or crease-resistant finishes. New chemicals have been introduced into the textiles industry in recent years. Some have the potential to damage the reproductive system, causing genetic defects in pregnant women or birth defects. |

ENG - Hazards of Mould - Sept '10

| Mould is a microscopic fungi that grows on wet organic matter. It reproduces itself by producing spores. Each spore is capable of germinating and developing a new colony in a very short period of time.
Most common moulds are not generally hazardous to healthy people, but there are some specific types of mould such as Stachybotrys Chartarum and Aspergillus that can cause adverse effects. Some moulds have been identified as carcinogens.
For mould hazards to be controlled, they must be recognized and assessed. To carry out these functions the joint health and safety committee/ health and safety representative(s) must have a basic understanding of how mould contamination occurs and how it can be remedied.

You will learn how to conduct a joint committee meeting and gain a clear understanding of the legal rights and responsibilities withing that role. You will learn the skills needed to perform incident and disease invstigations along with workplace assessments. Important research skills are needed to uncover information related to workplace hazards and health effects will also be reviewed. |

ENG - Job Task Analysis - Sept '10

| This course will focus on how to conduct a job task analysis in your workplace and what tools and methods you need to use. The emphasis is on the physical demands aspect of task analysis.
This course will be useful for the joint health and safety committee mem¬bers/ health and safety representative(s) who have, or are interested in having, input into job task design and other ergonomic conditions in the workplace.
This course is appropriate for those workers who have taken the “Ergonomics: Injuries, Risk Factors and Design Principles” course and "Applying Ergonomics to Prevent Musculoskeletal Injuries" course.

ENG - Lighting Hazards - Sept '10

| Lighting in most workplaces is often installed without input from workers and with little regard for their specific visual needs. Eye strain and visual fatigue caused by poor lighting and the need for maintaining uninterrupted visual and mental alertness are among the most important occupational health and safety hazards facing workers in the construction, health care, industrial and mining sectors. Failing to recognize the need to improve lighting conditions in the workplace endangers the health and safety of workers, and possibly the general public. |
ENG - Machine Guarding - Sept '10

| This course explores many of the hazards associated with improper or inadequate machine guarding including exposure to moving parts or hazardous projectiles. Relevant legislation will be reviewed along with hazard recognition and assessment tools such as workplace inspections and more detailed systematic analysis of machinery. Full enclosures around moving parts and preventive maintenance are just two of many practical control measures reviewed. |
ENG - Manual Material Handling - Nov '10

| Material handling refers to the movement and storage of raw materials or finished products in, out and about the workplace. Almost every type of work requires some sort of material handling. Manual material handling tasks are the direct cause of a large number and variety of injuries to workers. The most common are back injuries. |

| This 3-hour program explores how hours of work, scheduling, technological change, pace of work and other elements of work organization affect the health and well-being of workers. Relevant legislation is reviewed along with hazard recognition and assessment tools. Flextime, job enrichment and job rotation are just a few of the measures explored that look to overcome the hazards associated with poor work organization and lessen the risk to health faced by workers. |
ENG - Workplace Violence - Sept '10

| Workplace violence is an occupational health & safety hazard. Scientific studies and surveys about violence at work only date from the mid-1980s. Prior to that time little attention was paid to this problem. Awareness is increasing about exposure to violence on the job.
Workers in many occupations perform tasks that put them at risk. Those who deal with the public face the greatest danger of violence. This category includes retail sales, food service, hospitality and transportation, as well as health and education services. Recognizing workplace violence as an important health and safety hazard is the first step towards preventing it.
